What to Expect When You Get a New Roof

Getting a new roof is one of those experiences that probably only happen once or twice in your lifetime. A standard shingle roof can last 20 years or longer, but many roofing materials last 50+ years. If you’re in the early stage of life, read on to learn what to expect when you get a new roof.

Step 1 – Roofing Quote, Roof Inspection and In-Person Consultation

The first step in the roof replacement process is a professional roof inspection. A roofer will meet you at your property to evaluate your current roof and suggest different options for replacement. You’ll receive a roofing estimate, and then you can decide when to schedule your roof installation.

If you are getting a new roof for an insurance claim, there may be additional steps needed to get the insurance processed. Some roofing companies, like McLean Roofing and Siding, offer this service as part of their roof installation. Others will require you to work with the insurance company on your own.

Step 2 – Prep Work Leading up to Roof Installation

Depending on the scope of work, you may get a dumpster dropped off on your property a few days before the roof installation. This provides an area for the old roofing materials to go during the demolition stage.

If you have dogs or any outdoor animals on the property, you may want to make arrangements for them for install day. Some animals may get spooked by the construction noises, and it may be best to temporarily board them elsewhere.

You can be home during your roof installation, as long as the subfloor of the roof will remain intact. If your ceiling is going to be exposed during the installation process, you will likely need to leave the house for that part of the installation. Step 3 – Roof Demolition and Installing Your New Roof

When the big day comes, the roofers will quickly get to work tearing off your old roofing materials and replacing them with new ones. In some cases, the roofers will work in sections to prevent the roof from being open if it rains.

The installation process may only take a day, or it may require several days for more intricate projects. You’ll get a timeframe estimate ahead of time so you can make plans accordingly.

If you have any requests for the roofers, you can let the project manager know that day. For instance, you may have a garden on the property that you’d prefer workers not get near. You may have a gate that needs to stay closed or open. The roofers are happy to accommodate your needs as long as they do not interfere with safely completing the project.

Step 4 – Cleanup

When the workers are done, cleanup begins. This includes clearing out the old roofing materials and cleaning any debris that fell during the installation phase. If you had a dumpster on your property, it may take a couple days to get that picked up. Once again, you’ll be informed every step of the way.

Step 5 – Enjoy Your New Roof!

With demolition, installation and cleanup out of the way, you can finally enjoy your new roof! Most roofing materials come with warranties, so if an issue arises in the future, you can get it fixed.
